Iran’s CH-47C Chinook Helicopters

An Imperial Legacy

The Boeing CH-47 Chinook is a tandem-rotor helicopter originally developed by American rotorcraft company Vertol and now manufactured by Boeing Defense. The CH-47 has been in service with the Imperial Iranian Army Aviation (IIAA) since 1972.

The IIAA’s CH-47C Chinook helicopters were used extensively during the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988). The helicopters were used to transport troops, supplies, and equipment, and to evacuate wounded soldiers. The CH-47Cs also played a role in the 1978 Iranian Chinook shootdown, in which four IIAA CH-47Cs were shot down by Soviet MiG-21 fighters.

In Service Today

The IIAA still operates a fleet of CH-47C Chinook helicopters today. The helicopters are used for a variety of purposes, including:
